Before a product shoot: a prep checklist that saves reshoots
A good product photo doesn't depend on the camera alone; a clean product, consistent light, a list of angles and accurate colour matter more than effects. With many products in different colours and sizes, any mess before the shoot shows in the store photos.

Six practical steps
- Organise: a number for each item with its colour, size and the variants to shoot.
- Clean surfaces: fingerprints, dust and small scratches show under the lights.
- List the shots: front, 45 degrees, back, a close-up of the material, and an in-use shot to show size if needed.
- Agree the background: neutral for the store, in-context for campaigns, and keep the two separate.
- Fix the lighting: especially for a product range, so colours don't vary.
- Check a sample first: review the first shots on a proper screen before shooting the rest.
Retouching is useful for removing stray flaws and correcting colour, but it must not change the material, size or a feature in a way that misleads the customer.
